Geno Stone, the Bengals starting safety left the teams preseason opener against the Philadelphia Eagles with a soft-tissue injury.
Stone injured himself on the third play of the game before fleeing the field on the fourth play and ruled out the remainder of the game. Stone is currently listed as ‘week to week.’
Behind Stone and fellow starting safety Jordan Battle, the depth chart consists of Tycen Anderson and Daijahn Anthony. Head Coach Zac Taylor also says cornerback Dax Hill, who is recovering from a torn ACL, will take part in majority of drills over there last six practice
“That’s a group that we’re looking to make sure we’re deep enough there. So they’re gonna continue to get a lot of opportunities, certainly with Geno being out, so I think it’s a good chance to really see where they’re at in their development.” Taylor says.
It is possible the Bengals look for an additional safety in free agency such as Justin Simmons, Jordan Whitehead, or Marcus Williams. They would be at the top of the safety market.
Not only is Geno Stone dealing with an injury. Cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt is also dealing with a soft-tissue injury, while tight end Mike Gesicki is sidelined with a hamstring injury. Neither have a timetable for a return.
The Bengals next preseason game will be Monday, August 18th at 8:00 PM against the Washington Commanders.
