Bengals rookie Defensive End Shemar Stewart ran into Joe Burrow during training camp, which led to a little scuffle afterwards. There’s not a great angle of the hit but you can see the play just before Shemar lays a hit on Burrow.

Bengals Right Guard Lucas Patrick initiated the fight after shoving Stewart to the ground, who ended up hitting Burrow. Stewart then threw a punch at Patrick’s helmet, which started the fight. It doesn’t appear Stewart did this on purpose because Patrick shoved Stewart hard enough to cause him to stumble into Burrow’s lap.
Stewart was asked for an interview but he quickly declined saying “Today is not the day.” He was then seen confronting Burrow and having a short conversation with him about the incident.
Offensive lineman Lucas Patrick and Ted Karras both had comments about the scuffle during camp.
“We’ve gotta protect 9, it starts with me up front. I’ve got to play better, protect better. Can’t let 9 get hit.” Patrick said. “You be a pro about it. Man to man you talk to the person and squash it there, you know, it’s hot. It’s long days. We’ve been going Bengals vs. Bengals for I can’t even remember when we first reported.”
As for Karras, he seemed a little more frustrated with the whole situation.
“It doesn’t matter. The result is the result, come on, man. That’s our hopes and dreams right there. Karras said. “But it happened, we had to respond, and we’ve got to go into this meeting and get better.”
The fight could’ve sparked because of how poorly the offensive line was performing in practice. Defensive Tackle T.J. Slaton says there would’ve been at least four sacks in real action.
The Bengals first-team played five series in practice, the first one resulted in a 12-play drive for a touchdown pass to Tee Higgins. In their last four, they all resulted in a three and out. Joseph Ossai, rookie Howard Cross III, and Kris Jenkins Jr. each recorded sacks. T.J. Slaton also intercepted a pass from Joe Burrow on a screen thrown towards tight end Noah Fant. The offense also had a false start and delay of game. The first-team offense as a whole had a pretty rough day, which could be a good sign for a defense that struggled last season.
“Zac said in the spring that he wants us to be the closest team in the NFL, I think we’ve really taken to that, more so than any team since I’ve been here in the past.” Karras said. “There’s a lot of across-the-ball relationships, and I think we have a lot of really good pros.”
