Bengals coach Zac Taylor announced that left guard Cordell Volson will likely miss the entire 2025 season due to injury.
Volson reportedly suffered a right shoulder injury during camp on August 15th. Volson will have surgery on his shoulder.
Here’s what Zac Taylor had to say about the injury:
“That’s a tough one for him, he’s been a guy that’s really worked hard for us. I wouldn’t say it’s set in stone until he has the surgery, but that’s the direction it seems to be heading.”
Volson’s contract was restructerd earlier this offseason so it wouldn’t be surprising if he’s not on the team next season. This news could also prompt the Bengals to sign Dalton Risner, who visited the team on Tuesday and many reports indicated that it was a “strong meeting and workout” He is visiting the Seahawks and potentially the Steelers.
The 4th round pick in 2022 has started in 48 games for the Bengals. Last season, Volson allowed just six sacks in 984 snaps, which ranked 126th among guards according to PFF.
His best year of play came in 2022 when he played every offensive snap and the offensive line as a whole improved during the second half of the season. In 2023, he earned a performance-based pay bonus, receiving an additional $931,357 and it doubled his salary for the 2024 season.
Signing someone like Risner would boost the depth at the guard position especially with Lucas Patrick and Cody Ford dealing with minor injuries. That leaves rookie Jalen Rivers, who’s primary position is left tackle as the next man up.
